Annual Booklist 2022 : Contributors
The SAHR is pleased to share the latest edition of our annual Christmas book list. The aim remains the same - to provide members with some holiday gift and reading ideas and, in so doing, to promote the dissemination of high-quality scholarship. We've gathered entries from notable historians, including Templer prize-winners and shortlisted authors. Each provides five favourite books on the history of the British army and related forces, plus one suggestion of a book that doesn’t exist but should.
Dr Christian Tripodi
Dr Christian Tripodi is Reader in Irregular Warfare at the Defence Studies Department, King’s College London, and an Adjunct Scholar at the Irregular Warfare Institute at West Point. He is the author of Edge of Empire: The British Political Officer on the Northwest Frontier of India 1877-1947 (Routledge, 2011) and The Unknown Enemy: Counterinsurgency and the Illusion of Control (Cambridge University Press, 2021) which was shortlisted for the 2022 Templer medal.
Professor Raymond A. Callahan
Professor Raymond Callahan is an Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Delaware, where he taught for 38 years. He has written several distinguished books on the East India Company, the British Indian Army and the Second World War. His latest book, entitled The 1945 Burma Campaign and the Transformation of the British Indian Army and co-authored with Professor Daniel Marston, was awarded the Templer Medal for 2021.
Dr John Houlding
J.A. Houlding is a private scholar who lives with his wife in a village near Nürnberg, in Germany. He read European History as an undergraduate in Canada, followed by a doctorate in War Studies at King’s College London, and is currently writing a book on the officers of the 18th-century British Army. He is the author of Fit for Service: The Training of the British Army, 1715-1795 (1981).
Dr Kate Vigurs
Dr Kate Vigurs is a professional freelance historian whose recent book Mission France: The True History of the Women of SOE (Yale University Press, 2021) was shortlisted for the Templer Best First Book Prize.
Dr Vipul Dutta
Dr Vipul Dutta is an assistant professor who teaches modern history at the Indian Institute of Technology in Guwahati, India. His recent book Making Officers out of Gentlemen: Military Institution-Building in India 1900-1960 was shortlisted for the 2021 Templer Best First Book prize.
Professor Nick Lloyd
Nick Lloyd is Professor of Modern Warfare at King's College London, based at the Defence Academy UK in Shrivenham, Wiltshire. He is the author of five books, including The Western Front: A History of the Great War 1914-1918 (Viking, 2021), which was shortlisted for last year's Templer Medal.
Don N. Hagist
Don N. Hagist is the managing editor of Journal of the American Revolution (http://allthingsliberty.com). He studies the lives and service of individual British soldiers in the 1770s and 1780s, relying almost exclusively on primary sources. His books include Noble Volunteers: the British Soldiers who Fought the American Revolution (2020) and These Distinguished Corps : British Grenadier and Light Infantry Battalions in the American Revolution (2021). He is an engineer for a major medical device manufacturer and lives in Providence, Rhode Island, USA.
