Annual Booklist 2017 : Contributors
As with last year's list, the brief was for our contributors to list their five best or favourite books on the British Army, along with a suggestion for a new book which ought to exist but has yet to be written.
Ilya Berkovich
For many years a member of the SAHR Council and still the chair of judges for our Student Essay Prize competitions, Ilya is currently a Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, and is the author of Motivation in War: The Experience of Common Soldiers in Old-Regime Europe (Cambridge and New York: Cambridge University Press, 2017).
William Butler
Dr Butler is Associate Lecturer in British and Irish History at the University of Kent, author of The Irish Amateur Military Tradition in the British Army, 1854-1945 (Manchester University Press, 2016) – runner-up for the 2016 Templer Medal – and co-author of Military Recruitment in Ireland during the First World War (forthcoming).
Erica Charters
Dr Erica Charters is Associate Professor at the Faculty of History, University of Oxford, and author of Disease, War, and the Imperial State: The Welfare of the British Armed Forces during the Seven Years War (Chicago, 2014), and co-editor of Civilians and War in Europe, 1618-1815 (Liverpool, 2012).

Randall Nicol
Randall Nicol won the 2016 Templer Best First Book prize for his two-volume history of the Scots Guards in the Great War, Till the Trumpet Sounds Again (Solihull: Helion, 2016).
Ismini Pells
Dr pels is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Leicester.
