The SAHR's annual fellowship scheme recognises service to the Society and distinguished research into the history of the Land Forces of the Crown.

2026 Recipients

Professor Edward Spiers, Emeritus Professor, University of Leeds - in recognition of a lifetime of work on military history.

Professor Erica Charters, University of Oxford - for her work on war, disease, and bodies, particularly in the British and French empires.

Professor Matthew Hughes, Brunel University - for services to the Society as a judge on the Templer panel 2018-2025 and as Hon. Editor of the Society's Journal 2004-2008.

Professor Jennine Hurl-Eamon, Trent University - for her work on women, families and the British Army 1700-1880.

Dr Spencer Jones, University of Wolverhampton and Regimental Historian for the Royal Regiment of Artillery - for his work on the British Army in the First World War.

Professor Kaushik Roy, Jadavpur University - for distinguished contributions to the history of the Indian Army in the two world wars.

2025 Recipients

Professor John Childs, for a lifetime of work on the history of the British Army from 1660 to 1702 (published as a trilogy), the Stuart Restoration, and European military history of the early modern period.

Tim Cooke, for highly valuable services to Council during the Society’s financial difficulties of 2012 and for continuing advice to the Investments sub-committee.

Mick Crumplin, for significant contributions into the study and public engagement with British army medical history of the 18th Century-Napoleonic period.

Carole Divall, for distinguished contributions to the history of the British Army in the Napoleonic era and charitable services in support of SAHR and Waterloo200.

Professor John Laband, for significant contributions to the study of the Anglo-Zulu War.

Professor Kevin Linch, for a lifetime of work on the Napoleonic-era British Army, including a recent AHRC project to document the careers of thousands of officers (https://www.georgianarmyofficers.org/).

Professor Jessica Meyer, for a lifetime of work on gender, health, and First World War British Army service.

Dr Ismini Pells, for distinguished contributions to the history of the British Army and its antecedents in the 17th Century and long and distinguished service to the Society.

Major General Ashley Truluck, for distinguished services to the Society. He has served as Chairman twice: from 2014-2019 and 2023-2025.

Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter, for distinguished contributions to the history of the British Army and service to the Society.

2024 Recipients

Professor David French, in recognition of a lifetime's contribution to the history of the land forces of the Crown.

Major General Ewan Carmichael, for services to the Society as Chair during an extremely challenging period, 2019-2022.

René Chartrand, in recognition of distinguished contributions to the military history of Canada and to the Journal of the Society.

Dr Aimée Fox, in recognition of distinguished contributions to the study of the British Army in the twentieth century.

Professor Andrew Hopper, in recognition of the work entailed in masterminding the Civil War Petitions project (https://www.civilwarpetitions.ac.uk/) as an online resource.

Brigadier Justin Maciejewski, in recognition of the rejuvenation of the National Army Museum and his consistent support of the Society and its activities.

Lieutenant General Sir Simon Mayall, in recognition of distinguished contributions to modern strategic thought and support for the military museum sector.

Dr Eamonn O'Keeffe, in recognition of distinguished contributions to the history of the British Army in the Napoleonic era and to the study of military music.

Dr Christopher Phillips, in recognition of distinguished contributions to the study of military logistics.

Lieutenant General Sir Barney White-Spunner, for services to the Society as President, 2012-2024.

Dr Yolande Hodson, in recognition of the work entailed in cataloguing the military map collection of King George III to enable it to be made available as a public resource.

Dr John Houlding, in recognition of significant contributions to the history of the British Army in the eighteenth century and to the Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research.

Dr Rory Muir, in recognition of significant contributions to the study of the British Army in the Napoleonic era.

Professor Gary Sheffield, in recognition of significant contributions to the history of the British Army in the Great War and support of the Society over many years.
