‘Wellington, San Sebastian and Siege Warfare Revisited’ - Professor Bruce Collins

Thursday 14th June 2018

The Society was delighted to welcome Professor Bruce Collins of Sheffield Hallam University, who gave a talk on 'Wellington, San Sebastian and Siege Warfare Revisited’. Professor Collins described the operations to take San Sebastian in summer 1813, noting that it proved to be a much tougher nut to crack than Wellington had originally expected. He noted allegations that British siege craft during the Napoleonic Wars was deficient, sparking an animated discussion with members of the audience, who emphasized that the Duke of Wellington was often ‘in a hurry’ when besieging fortresses. Conversation continued over a wine reception and then over dinner.

SAHR would like to thank the War Studies Department at Kings College London for hosting the event, and William Fletcher for his work organising it.
