Templer First Book Prize Lecture: Dr Aimee Fox on 'Learning to Fight'
Thursday 12th September 2019
The Society’s annual Templer First Book Prize Lecture was held on 12 September 2019 at the Strand Campus of King's College London. Our speaker this year was Dr Aimée Fox, who presented on her award-winning book: 'Learning to Fight: Military Innovation and Change in the British Army, 1914-1918'.
In a fascinating talk, Dr Fox explored how the British Army innovated, shared information and incorporated best practice over the course of the First World War. She stressed the importance of personal relationships and inter-theatre knowledge exchange, highlighting a willingness to adapt procedures from one theatre to make them work in others. Dr Fox also described how the process of military learning was both helped and hindered by the British Army's institutional culture.
The enlightening talk was followed by a lively question and answer period, following which attendees retired to the Wellington pub for further discussion over drinks.
