Postgraduate Fellowship

Formalising the tradition of having a Student Representative on Council who can both offer the student perspective to our debates and also attempt to engage with the post-graduate research (PGR) community on the Society’s behalf, the Society for Army Historical Research seeks to appoint a Postgraduate Fellow for a term of two years beginning in April 2026.
The successful candidate should be a student at a UK institution, carrying out postgraduate work in Military History, War Studies, or an associated discipline, with a research focus on the Land Forces of the British Crown. The expectation is that the candidate would be undertaking postgraduate study for the majority of the duration of the fellowship period.
The successful candidate would:
* Represent the views of the Military History PGR community on Council (six meetings per year, usually two in-person and the remainder virtual).
* Engage with that community on the Society’s behalf, and attempt to grow its representation within our membership.
* Be offered the opportunity during their time in role to submit an article for our Journal based on their research (subject to usual editorial approval, peer review, etc), and to receive the support and guidance of the Hon. Editor and any other Council members as appropriate.
* Take the lead (with Council support) in organising a research conference that would take place towards the end of their two-year term.
There is no funding attached to this post, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed. Many of our previous student representatives have gone on to great things, including two winners of the Corvisier Prize.
