2026 Annual General Meeting
On 29 April, the Society returned to its ‘home ground’ at the National Army Museum for the Annual General Meeting. At the AGM, members reviewed the Society’s activities, voted on several motions, and elected members to Council. WE also welcomed our new Postgraduate Fellow, Mr Andrew Lawler BA, MLitt, who will represent the postgraduate research community.
The AGM was followed by a lecture from John Buckley, Professor of Military History at the University of Wolverhampton, on the subject of 'A Bridge Too Far: Film, History and Operation Market Garden'.
After the lecture, members convened over drinks and canapes for the annual prizegiving ceremony. The Templer Medal, for the best book published during the past year on the history of the British Army, was awarded to Dr David Grummitt for The Wars of the Roses: War and Martial Culture in England, 1455-1487. The Chapple Prize, for the best book on the same subject by a first-time author, was awarded to Dr Alexander S. Burns, for Infantry in Battle, 1733-1783.
The university and schools essay prizes were awarded to Catrin Barrowcliff of King’s College London, for an essay on the role of the King’s African Rifles in post-colonial East Africa; Ned Buckingham, of King’s College School Wimbledon, for an essay on the Suez Crisis; and Johnny Moesel of Sherborne School, for an essay on the Malayan emergency.
