Templer Lecture: Prof Raymond Callahan on the 1945 Burma Campaign

The annual Templer Lecture & Dinner was held at the Army & Navy Club on 17th November. Our speaker was Prof. Raymond Callahan, Emeritus Professor of History at the University of Delaware, who travelled from the USA to deliver his lecture in person on The 1945 Burma Campaign and the Transformation of the British Indian Army. Prof. Callahan spoke with great assurance on many aspects of the 1945 campaign and provided very detailed answers to questions from the audience afterwards.
Prof. Callahan co-authored the book of the same title with Prof. Daniel Marston, for which they were declared winners of the Templer Medal Book Prize for 2021. Uniquely, the Society awarded both authors a suitably engraved Templer Medal. Our Chair, Maj-Gen Ewan Carmichael presented Prof. Callahan with his medal immediately prior to the lecture.
Three of the Templer Medal judges were in attendance (Dr. John Peaty, Prof. Matthew Hughes, Mr Peter Robinson) along with a gratifyingly strong turnout of members and their guests.
The Dinner was a great success, with toasts proposed to the King, the Society and the late Prof. Christopher Duffy (renowned historian and RMA Sandhurst personality) – the port being the personal gift of the Chair.
