SAHR Templer Medal Shortlist Announced

The Society is pleased to announce the shortlist for the 2021 Templer Medal and the associated Best First Book Prize. Despite the many and varied challenges presented by the pandemic to authors and publishers, the judges received an impressive number of entries in 2021: fifty books from thirty publishers on four continents.
For the Templer Medal, the following works have been shortlisted by the judges:
The Unknown Enemy: Counterinsurgency and the Illusion of Control by Dr Christian Tripodi (Cambridge University Press)
The 1945 Burma Campaign and the Transformation of the British Indian Army by Prof Raymond Callahan and Prof Daniel Marston (University Press of Kansas)
The Western Front: A History of the Great War 1914-1918 by Dr Nick Lloyd (Viking)
Semut: The Untold Story of a Secret Australian Operation in WWII Borneo by Prof Christine Helliwell (Penguin Australia)
History of the British Army 1714-1783 by Prof Stephen Conway (Pen & Sword)
For the Best First Book Prize, the following works have been shortlisted:
The Regiment that Mapped the World by the late Maj Alan Gordon (Royal Engineers Association)
The Changing of the Guard: The British Army since 9/11 by Simon Akam (Scribe)
Mission France: The True History of the Women of SOE by Dr Kate Vigurs (Yale University Press)
Indian Soldiers in World War I: Race and Representation in an Imperial War by Dr Andrew Jarboe (University of Nebraska Press)
Making Officers out of Gentlemen: Military Institution-Building in India 1900-1960 by Dr Vipul Dutta (Oxford University Press India)
The winner and two runners-up in each category will be drawn from the above shortlists. The results will be announced on 27 April 2022 at the Society's Annual General Meeting at the National Army Museum, which also co-sponsors the prizes.
