Templer Lecture by Dr Jonathan Fennell on 25 November

Wednesday 25th November 2020

The Society’s Templer Lecture, delivered annually by the winner of the Templer Medal for the best book on British military history, took place on 25 November 2020. The event was held virtually for the first time due to pandemic-related restrictions, with members tuning in live from across the globe via the online webinar platform Demio. Our speaker this year was Dr Jonathan Fennell (King's College London), awarded the Medal for his acclaimed book Fighting the People's War: The British and Commonwealth Armies and the Second World War.

Dr Fennell shared fascinating findings from his ongoing research project on the New Zealand Expeditionary Force during the Second World War. He expertly explored themes including sickness, morale and combat fatigue, highlighting the relationship between class and conscription and the impact of military service on domestic voting patterns. The insightful lecture was followed by a stimulating Q&A session.
